Humanitarian Aid

You will be made rich in every way
so that you can  be generous on every occasion (2 Cor. 9:11)

In 2003 we were contacted by John Kachelman, Jr., expressing an interest in shipping a container of
humanitarian aid to the Harkivsky congregation for distribution in Kiev and surrounding areas.  From
that moment forward the Lord had blessed us every step of the way.  Key to this effort was agreement
by the East Brainerd congregation to make an effort to gather medical supplies, equipment and clothing!
The response was overwhelming!

A retiring dental surgeon donated his entire clinic to Ukraine. This included all tools, seven dental
chairs, filing cabinets, desks, chairs, and more.  This equipment will given to a dental clinic in Kiev.
Plans are to install it in a new children's hospital being built in the capitol.

Hospitals have donated more than 28 hospital beds, dozens of walkers, crutches, portable potties,
shower stools --- and much much more.  Too much to list.

Members of the East Brainerd congregation have donated hundreds of coats, sweaters, snowsuits,
          blankets, toys, and more.

The estimated inventory value of this shipment is $140,000.

Ukrainian medical doctors volunteered to translate the medical aspects of the 100 page inventory
to help the people of their country!  Along with other volunteers this represents a savings of $500.00.
They have also expressed an interest in helping on future shipments!

This container is only one of eight being shipped to Ukraine this time.  Seven more are planned for
           2005.

WHO DO WE HELP?

ORPHANAGE 12

Orphanage 12 is located at 123 Harkivsky Highway, only one mile from where the Harkivsky congregation meets.  This particular orphanage cares for about 122 children, ages 7-17.  All of them suffer from some type of mental disorder.
The complex has four buildings which house, educate and give medical attention to the children. At the time this picture was taken all the children were away to their summer camp.  We will post pictures of children at a later date.

                               INDIVIDUALS IN NEED

When Arkady first contacted the church
in response to a newspaper advertisement, he had a half body cast.  He had broken some bones when he fell on the ice and had already been in bed for a couple of months.  He had sold all his furniture to help pay for his surgery and slept in the kitchen to keep warm.  His plea to the Red Cross for aid had netted him only two rolls! Nevertheless, his only interest was in having a Bible study with us.   The church bought him food and cleaned up his apartment, which had become a real mess.
Arkady, age 63, has now been attending the weekly services of the Harkivsky congregation for one year!  He is always the first one to arrive and has a lot of Bible questions which come from his Orthodox background.  We are very happy to be able to help people like Arkady and know that there are more like him in the city.
